Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Unai Emery similar to ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger

Arsenal attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan has said that manager Unai Emery has a similar philosophy to that of former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger. The Spaniard took charge of the club during the summer following Wenger’s resignation and he has witnessed a tough start to the season with back-to-back losses against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Mkhitaryan indicated that both Emery and Wenger are quite identical in terms of the tactics on the playing field, though the former has tried to balance things with emphasis also on the defensive side of the game, he said: “It’s not too different but there are different things because there is not people playing in the same way or thinking in the same way, the philosophy is different. Emery kept the philosophy of Wenger but is building something new on it. He knows he can give something different to this club, like the balance between attack and defence. It’s not easy but I think he’s doing it in the right way.”

England international Jack Wilshere has admitted that he could pursue a fresh challenge in a foreign league after his contract with the Gunners concludes on June 30. The 26-year-old had been with the Gunners since the age of nine but he was forced to decline a new deal earlier this month after manager Unai Emery failed to assure him of a regular starting role.

Since then, there have been suggestions that Wilshere could head to Turkey with Fenerbahce keen on his services and the midfielder has now opened the possibility of securing a move abroad, he told Sky Sports News: “I am willing to go abroad if the right opportunity comes up. Also, everyone knows I like the Premier League and the battle of it. It is literally the best thing that comes up and the best opportunity that we will take. I am not really in any rush, today [Saturday] is actually my last day with my contract at Arsenal, so it’s been a bit of a strange day.”

ARTETA’S RETURN SHOWS ARSENAL WHAT THEY’RE MISSING

Mikel Arteta’s return to the Emirates will show Arsenal what they’re missing. It’s become a known fact that Arsene Wenger lacks leaders at his club – but, over the past few years, they’ve barely ever had their club captain on the pitch.

This season, Per Mertesacker has not yet made a single appearance. His predecessor, Mikel Arteta, managed just six league starts in his two years as club captain, while before that, then-skipper Thomas Vermaelen started only seven times in his final campaign before suffering a disastrous injury.
It means that, in Arsenal’s last 141 league games, their captain has started only 13 times. Continue reading

In the wake of the defeat on Tuesday during the UEFA Champions League game, Lionel Messi and City players exchanged strong words at the stadium’s tunnel. Investigations reveal that the former Arsenal skipper was the chief culprit behind the incident.

Spanish radio station, La Cope claims that Pep Guardiola’s assistant provoked the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. The report says that while Messi was waiting just outside the referee’s room after the game, Arteta said: “Move along stupid, get yourself in your dressing room.”

Messi, who was already disappointed and even fuming due to the loss, reacted, shouting: “Come over here and say that to my face, stupid.”

Reports also point fingers at City’s Fernandinho and a section of City low profile backroom staff. As the rumours of Fernandinho’s involvement made the round, the player quickly disassociated himself.

“I just want to say that the rumours that are circulating in the media are absurd: I didn’t even have contact with any Barcelona players or technical staff after the game,” the player posted on his personal Twitter page. Continue reading
